Mechanical timekeeping is influenced by position, temperature, power, activity, and the condition of the movement. A watch that differs slightly from a phone or radio-controlled clock is not necessarily malfunctioning. A sudden or substantial change deserves attention.

Measure a pattern, not one moment

Set the watch against a reliable time source and record the difference at the same time each day for several days. Note how long it was worn, whether it rested overnight, its resting position, and whether it remained adequately wound.

Do not repeatedly reset the watch during the test. The goal is to understand an average and identify inconsistency. Manufacturer tolerances vary by movement and certification, so compare results with guidance for the exact watch.

Consider power and wearing pattern

An automatic watch may not reach a strong state of wind if it is worn briefly or during low activity. A manual-wind watch may run differently near the end of its power reserve. Wind only as instructed; never force the crown after resistance increases.

If the watch stops much earlier than expected under consistent conditions, the movement, mainspring, or automatic-winding system may need inspection.

Position can change the rate

Gravity affects a mechanical oscillator, so dial-up, crown-down, and other positions can produce different rates. This is normal within limits and is one reason a timing machine measures several positions.

Do not use online “position hacks” as a substitute for service. A position that offsets a small daily difference may be harmless, but a large variation between positions can indicate a need for professional assessment.

Think about shocks and magnetism

A hard impact can affect regulation or damage components. Magnetism can cause some watches to run markedly fast, erratically, or stop. Common sources include strong speaker magnets, magnetic clasps, tablet covers, tools, induction equipment, and some electronic accessories.

Consumer phone apps and compass tests are not definitive. A watchmaker can check for magnetism and demagnetize the movement safely if appropriate. Do not place the watch on an unknown demagnetizer or open the case yourself.

Know when regulation is not enough

Regulation adjusts rate; it does not clean dirty lubricant, replace worn parts, restore poor amplitude, or repair impact damage. If the watch has an unknown service history, erratic readings, reduced power reserve, unusual sounds, difficult winding, or moisture, a fuller examination may be necessary.

Bring useful information

When requesting service, provide your multi-day observations, wearing pattern, recent shocks or magnetic exposure, and any previous work. This context helps a watchmaker distinguish normal variation from a new problem.

A mechanical watch is a tiny machine, not an atomic clock. Consistency and healthy operation are the meaningful goals.
